As a result of the Northern Ireland conflict, Belfast’s city centre communities are segregated from each other by ‘peace walls’. These communities have separate social activities, and sporting and educational facilities – they even produce different newspapers. Plans for the underdeveloped and underinvested INW could tear down these barriers. The aim is to create Belfast’s first mixed city centre neighbourhood that will connect to the wider city, create open spaces, retain and integrate heritage assets, provide a mix of uses, create density, and foster a sense of community by creating an inclusive place for everyone.
