All Saints former orphanage on Austral Street in Southwark was acquired by EPR Architects in 2016 and after an extensive retrofit has housed the firm’s 150 staff since 2022. The five-storey, 2,854sqm Victorian building has been reimagined as an open studio for collaborative working. Major refurbishment, including masonry and roofing repairs alongside insulation upgrades, have substantially extended the building’s useful life.

Built in 1913, the East Ham Old Fire Station had been left derelict since 1990. In 2016, a £2m investment Greater London Authority and dedicated housing financing enabled a creative retrofit that has turned the 400sqm building into 7 apartments and a 155sqm ground floor commercial unit. Reinstated original elements include the station’s lookout tower and the former engine hall.

The Arding and Hobbs department store is Grade-II landmark at the centre of Clapham Junction. The retrofit project has restored original features and created new spaces for retail, leisure and office use. The roof has also been repurposed as an 743sqm terrace with 46sqm of biodiverse planting.

Nottingham Energiesprong has seen the retrofit of 136 occupied council properties along West Walk, Keswick Street and Camden Close. The homes have been renovated and insulated to create low maintenance near net zero operational energy homes, after the local authority won £5m from the EU’s European Regional Development Fund. The retrofit of each of the 1960s homes was completed in 12 days, with the retrofits designed to extend the useful life of the housing by 60 years.

The Georgian external facades of the Grade-II listed former Royal London Hospital are a Whitechapel High Street landmark. The retrofit has created a home for Tower Hamlets Town Hall within its 2.6ha site. The £125m development includes a new build extension that provides six floors of open plan, flexible office space for 2,470 council staff plus partner organisations, a new council chamber and associated meeting facilities.
Winner in Creative Retrofit - The Pineapples Awards 2024
Located on the bank of the River Lea, 3 Mills Studios is the city’s oldest surviving industrial centre and has been a hub for TV and film since the 1980s. The retrofit project has created over 900sqm of new workspace for production teams through the adaptive and creative reuse of three key buildings: The Gin Still, the Grade-II listed Custom House and the Rush House. The improvement of flood resilience measures hopes to ensure the long-term preservation of this heritage site.
Winner of Creative Retrofit - The Pineapples Awards 2024
First completed in 1976 by Grimshaw for Herman Miller as a furniture factory, Bath Schools of Art and Design purchased the building in 2016 and hired Grimshaw to repurpose the 1ha grade-II building to accommodate around 800 students. The £23m project upgraded panelling and improved energy performance, as well as opening up the internal plan and raising the roof height.

The 27-storey Balfron tower in Poplar, part of the Brownfield Estate and sister to the Trellick Tower in West London, has been retrofitted with a conservation-informed approach. The £57m renovation of the Grade-II tower and its 146 apartments includes improvements to the public realm that contribute and reinstate the character of the original designs.
