Over several weeks and eight build days, community members helped bring their pocket park vision to life. The programme, aligned with community hub hours, offered activities for all, including painting, soil preparation, path and bench building, sign drawing, planting, and sowing wildflower seeds. The initiative fostered local engagement while delivering benefits that extend beyond the immediate area, creating a vibrant and inclusive space for the community.

Over 14 months, 1,100 people, representing one in twelve residents of the Leys, participated in over 40 community engagement events. Held three-to-four times per month, these one-to-two-hour sessions were scheduled at various times to maximise participation. Young people and children accounted for over 20 percent of attendees, reflecting strong community involvement and diverse engagement across age groups.

Originating from the philanthropic legacy of the Holt family, this project embraces a permaculture approach, focusing on long-term listening and adaptation. Lottery-funded initiatives trained residents in low-carbon building skills, contributing to hempcrete insulation installations. Two hidden gems were refurbished: a council-owned changing rooms building into a Therapy and Wellbeing Centre, ensuring financial sustainability.

The Public Realm Inclusivity Panel (PRIP) is an intergenerational group of 15 local residents, meeting monthly to provide design recommendations for the emerging masterplan. Formed after 13 workshops with youth, disability support, and older people’s groups, PRIP has conducted 24 co-design sessions so far. Through creative workshops, members actively contribute to ensure inclusive design and their time is well compensated. The panel fosters meaningful community engagement in the project.

The Reviving Greyfriars strategy boosted response rates by 500 per cent compared with past consultations, crafting a future inspired by the community’s industrial past. A bespoke digital platform and a public showcase at the Grosvenor Shopping Centre attracted 680 visitors and featured 3D models, artist renderings and interactive displays. Targeted advertising supported the initiative, which includes a new linear park at Greyfriars’ core and a new bus station.

Over three years, a community asset in Lewisham has been transformed into a new borough-wide centre, featuring a green meadow within 3.2 hectares (8 acres) of public space and 1,700 high-quality homes. An engagement space at No 25 welcomed 2,500 visitors, showcasing the area’s history and future plans. Creative initiatives included a Fortnite virtual build and DJ workshops. Fom 250 applicants, 15 design champions were selected, contributing to a 247 per cent biodiversity net gain across the site

In 2022, Wandsworth launched London’s first-ever Night Time Strategy (NTS), focusing on night workers, women and young people. Using heat maps to identify quiet spots, the strategy aims to enhance safety, support economic growth and increase night-time activity. Collaborations with Transport for London, the Metropolitan Police, community groups and local businesses drive the initiative, creating a safer, more vibrant night-time environment across the borough.
