Public Space

Eden Dock, London Borough of Tower Hamlets for Canary Wharf Group with Howells, HTA Design and Greengage

The 1.55-hectare site, funded by Canary Wharf Group, showcases nature-led placemaking. It features a 325-metre enclosed waterway with timber bleacher seating, gardens and walkways which bring the public realm down to the water. A cantilevered aquatic shelf supports saline-resistant plants and protects the public. With 55 per cent biodiversity net gain, the area includes floating islands, accessible walkways, seating and ramps, encouraging educational engagement.

West End Project, London Borough of Camden for Camden Council - with Central District Alliance, LDA Design, Norman Rourke Pryme, Arcadis and Michael Grubb Studio

Camden Council’s £35m investment into the area around London’s Tottenham Court Road aims to dramatically enhance urban public space. The project reclaims road space for 0.7ha of new parks, squares and incidental pocket plazas and the re-imagining of 0.3 hectares of existing space. Removing the one-way systems and reducing traffic on Tottenham Court Road and Gower Street. The planting plan includes over 1,000m2 of new beds and borders.

The Park at Elephant Park, Southwark, London – Lendlease

Elephant Park’s central park is a stunning 2-acre green oasis including community space with expansive lawns, mature London plane trees, Elephant Springs, a landmark water playscape, and pedestrian walkways nestled among naturalistic planting.

The Claypits, Glasgow’s Inner City Nature Reserve - Scottish Canals with LUC

The Claypits is a large 17ha area of post-industrial site that straddles the canal. This project’s greatest achievement is its redesignation from ‘Vacant and Derelict Land’ to a ‘Local Nature Reserve’.

2022 Public Space Winner

West Gorton Community Park, Manchester - Manchester City Council with BDP

This new community park in Manchester, is the first UK demonstrator project for the GrowGreen initiative. Its data and management of the flow of rainwater into sustainable urban drainage systems, will be influential in the design of other green spaces in flood prone areas across Europe.

2021 Public Space Sustainable Transport

Cheney Row Park, Waltham Forest - London Borough of Waltham Forest with We Made That

This public space has been transformed from a former landfill site to a new space with woodland area of 467 new trees planted in the park, a BMX track and a bespoke and proprietary play kit used by children of all ages. This reinvention of the space has added to the play and enjoyment of the community.

Strand Aldwych Public Realm, Westminster – Westminster City Council with LDA Design

After the dramatic removal of traffic and pedestrianisation of the Strand in 2021, a safer and calmer space has emerged. Multi-coloured seating lines a large performance space with programming commissioned by the surrounding arts institutions. Communal dining, flowerbeds, new trees and cycle stands have increased dwell time in a previously busy and dense section of the city
