Right to the City is a live action research programme that explores how women, girls, and non-binary people experience public space in the City of London after dark, and how their voices can shape safer, more inclusive urban environments where they feel they belong. It responds to a growing recognition that traditional approaches to safety fail to capture the spectrum of lived experiences of those who feel underrepresented in city planning.
Commissioned by Transport for London and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime, We Made That and our supporting expert panel have spent the past year developing a methodology for piloting women’s safety audits across London. Through an engaged and collaborative process with 47 women, girls, and gender diverse individuals across five pilot locations, as well as an advisory board and the UCL Citizen Science Academy, we developed tools to capture and assess experiences of safety.
The Places for London Skills Academy empowers Londoners to pursue careers in the built environment through impact-driven initiatives. It uses Places for London’s role as a public sector commissioner to unite industry partners and inspire diverse talent to address the skills gaps. Festival of Ideas was a six-week community engagement campaign empowering Caerffili residents to co-create their town centre’s future. Moving beyond consultation to genuine partnership, the initiative engaged over 500 people through creative workshops, public events, and digital surveys. It targeted underrepresented groups including disabled people, older adults, young people, and families. Public awareness of the placemaking plan doubled from 28% to 56%.
Curate Enfield is an intergenerational grassroots public art programme empowering residents to transform their town centres and high streets through vibrant, site-specific artworks. With over 40 artworks delivered across Enfield, residents have shaped their surroundings and celebrated local culture and heritage. Each project turns everyday spaces into vibrant shared experiences, fostering pride, connection, and belonging.
Firmly rooted in people and place, Liveable Neighbourhoods is Glasgow City Council’s approach to 20-minute neighbourhoods. The engagement saw delivery of 60 community workshops, co-design events and online activity with 1,200 participants over 12-months. Working directly with communities, the project sought to build a collective vision of their future places built on a deep understanding of local needs and aspirations. The resulting neighbourhood plans contribute to a bottom-up placemaking.
In 2024, Pentland Group relocated their lakeside campus at Squires Lane, Finchley, after nearly forty years on the site and wanted the site’s future to be shaped by the local community. Having been a closed campus for over 150 years, JTP were appointed to lead an exploratory co-design process through site tours, workshops and interactive activities tailored for all ages, engaging local residents and potential partners to inform the Pentland Group’s legacy.
